Belgian film student Sofie Peeters was constantly being accosted by men on the streets of Brussels as she went about her business. So she decided to make a film about it.
Femme de la Rue has quickly become a political football. The Grauniad newspaper, along with many other commentators, seems to have focused on what this says about relations between the sexes in general. However…
"Peeters has denied charges of racism as the film shows mainly jeers by men of immigrant north African origin."
Well hello. This seems to be a very important point that is not being explored. The men doing the harassing are, it seems, Muslim Arabs. Why is this crucial piece of information not given prominence in the story?
Since I am not a woman, and have no ability to observe what being a woman is like when one is walking by herself down a street, it’s hard for me to speculate on these matters, but what the heck, I’m going to do it anyway. I’m not sure this is a common problem in the modern day. The times when grown men could act like fourteen year olds in front of attractive women and get away with it are long gone, largely dying out somewhere in the late ’80s or early ’90s when sexual harassment lawsuits became all the rage. However, "men of immigrant north African origin" do not live in the modern day. They are tied to a religion and a culture where women are seen as property, and Western women are seen as whores. This is not an issue of men in general being oafish, this is an issue of Muslim immigrants not conforming to liberal Western values, and bringing their own backward values with them to their new place of residence. And it is a debate that the supposedly liberal Left refuse to have regarding the flow of immigration.
What can be done about this situation? Legally, not a lot. Men have a right to free speech, and a right to approach strange women in public. If they didn’t, I suspect the human race would have a hard time reproducing. There is often a fine line between chatting and harassing, and a cynic would say it all depends on how good looking the man is, but calling a woman abusive names is disgraceful. As with all issues of free speech, the answer is more speech, not less. Oafish men need to be pulled up on their bullshit and confronted, either by the women themselves, or by other, more chivalrous men. Just like radical Islam itself, if it is tolerated or ignored, it will simply keep happening.
